Morzine Après Ski Bars
by Peter Richards | 15th December 2025
You don’t need skis strapped to your feet or a board tucked under your arm to fall in love with Morzine. The village hums with life all winter long, and while the pistes are buzzing above, there’s a whole world of activities unfolding in the valley. Morzine is as much about culture, atmosphere, and mountain beauty as it is about skiing, and for non-skiers, it’s a playground waiting to be explored.
Morzine is one of those rare ski towns that doesn’t feel like it was built just for the lifts. Its streets wind around traditional chalets, artisan shops, and cozy cafés. For a non-skier, the simple act of wandering here is a pleasure: French patisseries with flaky croissants, chocolatiers with window displays impossible to ignore, boutiques full of mountain-inspired clothing, and little souvenir shops with local crafts. The sound of boots clunking past mixes with chatter in different languages, but there’s no rush if you’re not headed for the slopes.
Just because you’re not skiing doesn’t mean you miss out on the mountain views. Snowshoe trails wind through forests and meadows, leading to quiet corners where you hear nothing but snow crunching underfoot. Take a guided snowshoe hike (check out DaysAway Adventures!), or venture out on one of the marked trails to discover frozen rivers and hidden viewpoints. It’s slower, calmer, but every bit as rewarding as skiing.
In the heart of Morzine you’ll find the open-air ice rink, right by the tourist office. By day it’s filled with families laughing, falling, and trying again. By night, fairy lights and mountain silhouettes make it feel magical. The covered Palais des Sports rink offers another option indoors, where you might even catch an ice hockey match – Morzine is fiercely proud of its team les Pingouins, and the atmosphere in the stands is electric!
Sometimes après-ski isn’t about drinks at all. Morzine has an indulgent side: wellness centres, spa hotels, and thermal pools. Picture sinking into a hot tub while the snow falls outside, or stretching out in a sauna after a massage. For non-skiers, a spa day is more than just relaxation, it’s a way to recharge and still feel part of the mountain rhythm, without the exertion of the pistes. We love SPA Les Sources du Chéry in Les Gets for a special treat!
If you want adrenaline without skis, sledging is the answer. Dedicated toboggan runs in and around Morzine turn the simple act of sliding downhill into an adventure. Families race, friends laugh until their cheeks hurt, and the climbs back up are part of the fun. Over in nearby Les Gets, the night-time luge on lit trails adds an extra thrill, with stars overhead and headlights glowing in the snow.
Just a quick lift ride away via the Prodains Express cable car, Avoriaz is worth visiting even if you never touch skis. The resort is car-free, with horse-drawn sleighs jingling through snow-packed streets. Cafés and bars perch on the edges of cliffs, offering views that stretch endlessly. It feels otherworldly, and wandering here, even just for a day, is like stepping into a winter fairytale.
Morzine’s roots run deep. Step inside the slate workshop and learn about the stone that once fuelled the local economy. Visit small chapels tucked away in the valley. Join a cheese tasting, where local farmers proudly share Reblochon, Tomme, and Abondance. Culture in Morzine isn’t just in museums; it’s in the way the village breathes.
Non-skiers aren’t left out of the après scene either. Sit on a terrace with a vin chaud, listen to live music at Cavern, or take the shuttle up to Happy Hours at Ardent. The social heartbeat of Morzine doesn’t start on the pistes, it starts when people come together to share the stories of their day, no matter how they spent it.
For non-skiers, Morzine isn’t a compromise. It’s a chance to see the mountains at a slower pace, to soak in the atmosphere, and to enjoy the alpine lifestyle without needing to clip into bindings. Whether it’s snowshoeing under pine trees, skating in the square, or sipping coffee in a sun-soaked café, the magic of Morzine lies in how it welcomes everyone – skiers, boarders, and dreamers alike.
